earthstock 2007
The Plainville Conservation Commission hosted its first annual Earth Day celebration this year. Earthstock 2007 was held on Sunday, April 22 from 10:00AM to 2:00PM at Paderewski Park. The event was coordinated by Estelle Carenza, Conservaton member.
DEP Commissioner Gina McCarthy headlined the event and kicked off the scavenger hunt (sponsored by Kids Cuts of Plainville) at 11:00AM. Congressman Christopher Murphy followed by addressing those in attendance.
Throughout the day, Mother Nature, played by Plainville native Dr. Colleen Richard (who starred in her 3rd grade play at Toffolon Elementary School as “roadside litter”) handed out flower seed packets; free blue spruce seedlings were made available as well. Afternoon highlights included a performance by the Toffolon Elementary School Choir, magic by local favorite The Great Leone, and a drawing for two free bikes, courtesy of Renaissance Cyclery.
A biofuel car that runs on used cooking oil, an electric mini-bike, and a working solar oven were on display, and Carole Miller of Topmost Herb Farm in Coventry discussed organic composting. An assortment of ecologically-minded companies, as well as local & school organizations, offered products, services, demonstrations, and literature.
Other attractions featured throughout the event were sidewalk art, face painting, and Cupcake the Clown. Vinci Concessions was on hand with popcorn, cotton candy and snow cones for sale.
Earth Day was first launched on April 22, 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, whose hope it was to “thrust the issue of environmental quality and resources conservation into the political dialogue of the nation.”
